Family Trees
The family tree builder lets you map out bloodlines, dynasties, and the relationships between people — whether they're real characters on Loreden or purely fictional figures in your world's lore.
Creating a tree
From the Worldbuilding section, open the Family Trees tab and click New Family Tree. Give the tree a name — the name of the family, lineage, or dynasty usually works well — and you'll land on the canvas editor.
Adding people
Click anywhere on the canvas and choose Add person. Each person card can include:
- Name
- Title (e.g. Lady, King, Archdruid)
- Birth and death years
- Portrait image
- Short biography
You can add as many people as you need. The canvas is infinite, so large dynasties aren't a problem.
Relationship types
Once you have people on the canvas, you can draw connections between them. Loreden supports several relationship types:
| Relationship | What it does |
|---|---|
| Parent / Child | Draws a vertical generational line. Loreden auto-arranges the layout by generation when you use this type |
| Married | Draws a horizontal partnership line between two people at the same level |
| Sibling | Connects two people at the same generational level |
| Custom | A free-form connection with a label you define — useful for relationships like mentor, sworn enemy, or adopted by |
Auto-layout
When you use parent-child relationships, Loreden can automatically arrange the tree so that each generation sits on the correct visual row. Click Organise layout to apply this at any time. You can still manually drag nodes afterwards to fine-tune positions.
Linking to characters
If a person in the tree is also a playable character registered on Loreden, you can link the two. Open the person's card and choose Link to character. Once linked:
- The card displays the character's avatar
- Clicking the card takes you directly to the character's profile
- The character's page shows a reference back to the family tree
This is especially useful for player character genealogies.
Sharing without a Loreden account
Every family tree can generate a public share link. Anyone with the link can view the tree in their browser — no Loreden account needed. Share it in your Discord server, paste it in a campaign doc, or send it directly.
The public link is view-only. Only people with edit access in Loreden can make changes.
Extracting members
If one branch of a family tree has grown large enough to deserve its own separate tree, you can extract a person into a new tree. Extracting creates a fresh tree with that person as the root, and optionally carries across their relationships.
Exporting connections
The relationships defined in a family tree can be exported to the Connections section of a character's profile. This saves you from entering the same relationship data twice.
