Worldbuilding
Loreden's worldbuilding system is a place to gather, organise, and connect all the lore that makes your campaign world feel real. Whether you're building a complete homebrew setting or just keeping notes on the world your GM has described, it's built to grow with you.
What is a worldbuilding entry?
Each piece of lore in Loreden is called an entry. An entry has a title, a category, and a collection of fields that guide you through what to write.
Every category comes with a set of template fields — short prompts that help you capture the most useful details without staring at a blank page. You can answer as many or as few as you like.
Categories
Entries are organised into categories based on what they describe:
| Category | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Geography | Regions, cities, dungeons, natural landmarks, rivers, seas |
| People | Named NPCs with backstory, goals, relationships, and appearance |
| Factions | Nations, guilds, cults, and other organisations |
| History | Eras, events, and turning points in your world's past |
| Religions | Deities, churches, sacred texts, and religious practices |
| Magic | How magic works in your world, traditions, and schools |
| Languages | Spoken or written languages, their speakers, and sample phrases |
| Creatures | Unique or notable monsters and animals |
| Flora | Plants — their uses, cultural significance, and where they grow |
| Economy | Trade goods, currencies, and crafting materials |
| Lineages | Noble bloodlines and dynastic families |
| Artefacts | Legendary items, relics, and rare materials |
| Hazards | Diseases, magical blights, environmental dangers |
| Myths | Legends, folk tales, and campaign folklore |
Rich text and images
Each entry has a large free-text body where you can write as much as you like. The editor supports basic formatting — headings, bold, italic, bullet lists, and more.
You can also upload images to entries: reference art, maps, portraits of NPCs, or anything that helps bring the subject to life.
Tags and search
Entries can be tagged freely. Tags make it easy to find related content — for example, tagging several entries with thorndale lets you pull up everything about that city at once.
The search bar in the worldbuilding section searches titles, content, and tags simultaneously.
Backlinks
When you reference another entry by name in your writing, Loreden tracks the connection automatically. The Backlinks panel on each entry shows you every other entry that mentions it — so you can see the full web of connections around any piece of lore.
Sharing entries
Entries can be shared with other users by adding them as collaborators. You choose whether they can view only or also edit. This works well for collaborative worldbuilding between players and GMs.
Entry status
All entries have a status you can set:
- Draft — still being written, not yet ready to share
- Beta — good enough to use, but potentially subject to change
- Published — finalised and visible to anyone you share with
Connecting to other features
Worldbuilding entries connect with the rest of Loreden:
- Timeline events can link to worldbuilding entries, so you can read the full lore article directly from the timeline
- Goal tasks can link to entries, so your to-do list tracks which articles still need writing
- Map pins can point to location entries, making your maps interactive references
